Mining quick read

Mining is not one activity. It is a chain: find the rock, extract it efficiently, keep the ship alive, compress or haul it, refine or sell it, then compare the result against opportunity cost.

Compare by m³

Lasers mine volume

A miner pulls a volume per cycle, not a fixed number of ore units. Normalizing by m³ makes different ores easier to compare.

Do not trust paper value

Liquidity beats fantasy ISK

A high refined value means little if the buyer stack is thin, far away, or behind structure taxes and hauling risk.

The important habit is matching the crystal family to the ore family. Type choice is then a resource-preservation decision: Type A for steadier preservation, Type B when speed matters more, and Type C only when waste is acceptable or intentional.

Residue habit: mining crystals and some mining drones can destroy part of the asteroid as residue. That can be fine when speed matters, but it is bad manners on shared moons or limited rocks unless the fleet expects it.

Compression and reprocessing basics

Mining profit usually leaks in the boring steps: hauling too much volume, refining in the wrong structure, ignoring fees, or selling into a weak order book.

Compression

Move less volume

  • Compressed ore is easier to haul and stage than raw ore.
  • Compression is especially valuable when the mining site is far from the buyer or refinery.
  • Check whether the compressed version has better liquidity than raw ore before assuming it sells faster.
  • Corp fleets should agree where compression happens before the hold fills up.
Reprocessing

Yield is not the whole equation

  • Skills, implants, structure rigs, tax, and owner settings all change the mineral result.
  • Perfect-looking mineral value can lose to fees and hauling cost.
  • Refining locally may beat hauling raw ore, even if the hub price looks higher.
  • Never compare raw ore to minerals without counting broker fees and sales tax.

Mining safety checklist

The miner who survives keeps more ore than the miner with a perfect yield fit and no defensive habits. This checklist is deliberately practical.

Before you undock

  • Fit real tank if the ship is worth killing.
  • Know your route, station, structure, or safe bookmark.
  • Check recent kills in the system and nearby pipes.
  • Decide whether the ore value justifies the ship and cargo risk.

While mining

  • Watch Local for unfamiliar pilots and sudden spikes.
  • D-scan for combat probes, catalysts, bombers, dictors, and tacklers.
  • Keep an escape object selected and align when practical.
  • Do not ignore rats; drones and tank are part of the mining plan.

When hauling

  • Do not autopilot value-dense ore or compressed cargo.
  • Scout chokepoints if the cargo matters.
  • Split loads when the single-load value becomes bait.
